Whenever I’ve driven along State Highway 49 outside of Nevada City road-tripping to Downieville and Sierra City, I had always seen a sign for Malakoff-Diggins State Historic Park. I had always been curious about the park, but never took the opportunity to check it out. Earlier this year, I got that opportunity. A friend of mine, Allen, had wanted to do some metal detecting there at the park, and he asked to come along. I’m not into metal detecting, but decided to go with him to see what this place was all about. It’s the site of an old historic Gold Rush gold mining town called North Bloomfield. In its heyday in the Gold Rush era, it sported a saloon, school, church, shops and a fire department. Not many live in the town today, but it preserved as it was in the 1800s. We went to a deserted site off the main road so he could do this thing. While he did his metal detecting, I ambled around and took some pictures:
The old abandoned cabin we ended up at
A look inside….looks like a kitchen, perhaps?
The back entryway to the cabin…..fixed up, it would be a good getaway vacation cabin!!
A side view of the cabin…..from here, it looks to be a good-size cabin.
The front of the cabin…..looks to be a front patio as well.
The outhouse outside the cabin, when going to the bathroom in the middle of night literally required shoes and a lantern!!
A closer look inside……anyone need to use the loo?!
A look at some of the things found around the cabin.
Some more things scattered about.
Even an old abandoned car!! Anyone interested in a new set of wheels……..DIRT CHEAP!!!
And here is the historic town of North Bloomfield!
Allen checking out one of the buildings!
Taking a closer look inside an old barber shop!
A peek inside an old-fashion soda shop/ice cream parlor!
An old general store building.
Another peek inside!
Allen taking a peek inside the church/community center building.
The North Bloomfield Fire Department!!!
The historic North Bloomfield School
A closer look at the outhouse outside the school.
Well, I hope you enjoyed the little tour of Malakoff-Diggins and North Bloomfield. Should you ever find yourself driving along Highway 49 in the Mother Lode outside of Nevada City and you happen to see the sign for Malakoff Diggins/North Bloomfield, take a little detour and check the place out! It’s pretty neat!!
Cheers!!
