QUINCY TO TRUCKEE

In continuing with the road trip to Truckee theme, I’ve decided to include pictures from a road trip I did from Quincy to Truckee in the summer of 2013, a road trip I’ve done several times.  Quincy is an unincorporated town in Plumas County within the Plumas National Forest.  In fact, Quincy is the county seat, and is the largest community in Plumas County.  It’s really kind of an isolated community, miles from the nearest community.  Two direct routes into and out of Quincy is on State Highway 70, from the west in Marysville, and from the east just off U.S. Highway 395 in Lassen County.  In fact, State Highway 70 cuts through the heart of Quincy.  There’s the downtown/central part of Quincy, then there’s an entirely separate business/residential area a few miles east of Central Quincy, known as East Quincy.  The drive into Quincy from the west is probably the most scenic, as State Highway 70 goes through what is known as the Feather River Canyon, which is a beautiful drive.  It’s a scenic drive to do on a nice weekend day, and if you’re a fan of trains, you’ll be in heaven as there are railroad tracks that wind their way through the canyon.  The actual drive from Quincy to Truckee is about a two-hour drive, but it is a beautiful drive to do on a wonderful weekend! So if you ever get a chance to get to Quincy, make the drive.  It’s a nice community with a quaint downtown, and a wide lawn with benches outside the Plumas County Courthouse where you can sit and relax and have a picnic lunch! Enjoy the tour!

The Plumas County Courthouse.  The courthouse is in the heart of Downtown Quincy, like most courthouses in small towns!!! The main drag through downtown is Main Street, which is also State Highway 70.

A close-up shot of the courthouse.  Beautiful building!

I like these old-time barbershop poles!

The Courthouse Cafe sign….the coffee shop in Downtown Quincy, directly across from the courthouse.

Okay, I’m going to cheat on these next few pictures.  I took these prior to this road trip, maybe a year before.  They were taken along State Highway 89 between Quincy and Truckee:

The junction of State Highways 89 and 49.  Turn left for Truckee.  Turn right to head to Downieville.

Truckee at last!!

Downtown shops and an old mural advertising the Hotel Rex with its, “Steam Heated Rooms”

Downtown shopping!

IMG_1375

The Truckee Jail Museum.  The jail was in use from the 1800s until about 1964.  This is a small museum I haven’t had the opportunity to check out, though it looks quite interesting!

IMG_1376

The plaque on the side of the jail museum.  It opened in 1875.

IMG_1377

The small park tucked behind the jail museum.  I sometimes like to go to this park with a cup of coffee from next door at Coffeebar Truckee (great place to get coffee I might add), and just sit and think for a few minutes.

The view from the small park behind the jail museum.

IMG_1382

An old abandoned building on Jibboom Street in Downtown Truckee.  Not sure what this building once was.  I don’t think it’s even there anymore.

The corner of Spring Street and Donner Pass Road in Downtown Truckee.

A view outside of Bespoke Truckee, a cute little shop in Truckee.  The owners, Brian and Heather recently opened a new space two doors down from Bespoke called Atelier.  Both neat shops, and Atelier has a classroom in back where courses from knitting to photography to calligraphy are taught.

IMG_1385

The retro Flying A Service Station.  I posted a picture of this station in my last post where it is currently a brewing company.  At the time this picture was taken in 2013, it was a real estate office, and before that it was a clothing store.

Vintage gas pumps at the gas station.

Another shot of downtown from across the street.

IMG_1403

A shot of the old-time Hilltop Lodge, now home to the Cottonwood Restaurant.  The restaurant is above Downtown Truckee up on Brockway Road.  A very nice and popular place to have dinner and drinks.  Plus, you can dine outdoors and have a view of downtown!!

IMG_1392

Now let’s take a quick peek at West River Street!

IMG_1398

The Alta Hotel.  Could this have been an old-time hotel at one point in time??

IMG_1399

The-then brand new Morgan’s Lobster Shack and Fish Market, which closed at the time due to a fire.

IMG_1401

The Truckee River flows through the heart of town.  Now, because of the drought, the river has shrunk.

IMG_1390

One final shot of Downtown Truckee

Final leg of the tour: a quick peek at Tahoe Donner!

IMG_1406

The Tahoe Donner sign on Northwoods Boulevard.  Tahoe Donner is Truckee’s largest subdivision, and is located several miles from Downtown.  Since its inception in the 1970s, many folks, mostly from the SF Bay Area, have bought second homes here in Tahoe Donner and usually come up on weekends.  Though there are a few permanent residents there, you’ll typically find people who own second homes there.  There’s a golf course, tennis courts, hiking trails, even a few restaurants there.  Though there are amenities for residents only, there are also other amenities open to the general public as well.

A warning sign warning motorists and residents of drifting snow and high winds during the winter months!

And a look down at some homes in Tahoe Donner.

Well, I hope you all enjoyed my little tour of Quincy to Truckee.  It is a good road trip drive if you enjoy mountains, forests and scenery.  Plan to start out early as it usually will be a full day, especially if you’re like me and like to get out of the car along the way from time to time to get out and enjoy nature!

Until next time……

Cheers!
